This year, I found myself invited to the briefing for this year’s 9th Toy Convention, whose theme focuses on DC Comics’ 75th anniversary. I was surrounded by fan-boys (fan-men, really): There was one who brought his Superman figurine collection, a Red Son version (a what-if-Superman-had-landed-in-Russia-instead-of-the-US series), which was even reverently passed around and fawned over.

I kept silent because I didn’t want to betray the fact that, given a chance to choose comics on Free Comic Book day, I chose DC Kids instead of the more bad-ass titles, because it had an adorable masked puppy on the cover, and because my favorite comic-book character was Betty Cooper (superpower: good at home economics).

==============================

======
Attention, Filipino comic book fans!

If you’ve got nothing better to do on Saturday, January 3, 2009 stop by Comic Odyssey in Robinsons Galleria between 2 PM – 4 PM and meet me and artist Elbert Or.

I’ll be giving away copies of Wonder Girl and Ninja Scroll, as well as Wonder Woman pins (courtesy of DC Comics).

Elbert will be previewing art from our upcoming Oni Press graphic novel Lola: A Ghost Story.

Comic Odyssey
Robinsons Galleria Branch
Ortigas, Quezon City
Philippines

Hope to see you there! Until then, have a Merry Merry and a Happy Happy!

J.Torres

——————–

J. Torres is the writer of Family Dynamic, Legion of Super Heroes in the 31st Century, and Wonder Girl for DC Comics.

Other works include the Eisner Award nominated Alison Dare, the ALA listed Days Like This, the Harvey nominated Sidekicks and the Shuster Award winning Love as a Foreign Language and Teen Titans Go.

His upcoming projects include Lola: A Ghost Story and Dead Goombas for Oni Press as well as new Degrassi: The Next Generation webisodes for Epitome Pictures.

http://jtorresonline.blogspot.com/2008/09/lola-first-look.html

Here’s the first look at my next project for Oni Press, the graphic novel Lola: A Ghost Story. “Lola” is the Tagalog (Filipino) word for grandmother and this story is loosely based on some tall tales about my own maternal grandmother’s childhood, some other family “history,” as well as some folklore and mythology from the Philippines.

The artist of Lola is the multi-talented Elbert Or, whose blog can be found here. While you’re there, make sure to check out his webcomics, which can be accessed from the right hand sidebar. The effectively minimalist and iconic Love and Heartbreak is probably my favourite one, but Camy and Me is also very charming and fun.
